Rev.com Review

Hello!

I’m attempting to work with Rev.com again. I’ve worked with them in the past, and I didn’t enjoy it much. With Rev.com, you can apply to transcribe audio or to caption videos. The captioning guidelines are a little more intense, but that’s what I applied for.

I only captioned a few video files over two days. At the time, I didn’t have internet at my house, and getting to a coffee shop with free Wi-Fi without the child (while not being able to drive) was very difficult for me. While these problems could have easily been overcome, my goal was to find work online that would allow me to not put my child in daycare or leave the house. Those are supposed to be the perks of online work, right? To work remotely? That was not the case for me at the time.

On top of those personal hurdles, the actual video files that I was supposed to caption were difficult to understand, and it took me a long time to caption the files according to the guidelines. And the pay is sad. The Rev.com website says that they pay about $0.33-$1 per minute (I forget exactly how much). Theoretically, you could earn $20-$60 per hour. HOWEVER, Rev doesn’t pay by the amount of time it takes to caption a file. They pay by how long the file is. So a five minute file can take up to two hours to caption by Rev’s guidelines, but you only get paid for five minutes. And that’s (at best) only $2.50 an hour.

Even so, I did get paid a whopping $12.50 for a few hours of work. I think I only worked six or seven hours. Even though that’s not a large amount of pay, I am going to try Rev out again since I now have internet access at my house. Although, when I log in to the website, I’m not seeing the option to do any work. I’m hoping this is either a temporary bug or that there isn’t much work since this is the week of Thanksgiving.

My plan is to work for three to four hours a night after my child goes to bed. If I make the same rate of pay as before, I can easily pay for the internet completely and still bring in about $100 per month. However, if Rev continues to not let me work on their platform, I can find a different platform to work on that may even pay more than Rev. I actually think I should head over to Fiver.com and list my services as a transcriber. If that works, then Rev could just be a backup. I kind of think that’s more of what Rev’s intended for, anyway. Rev seems like an ok place to make a bit of pocket money, especially if you happen to be too young to work, but I think it’s nigh impossible to make enough money from Rev for that to be your primary source of income.
